How a Book—Not as Good as This One—Made Me See Stars!!!
I was on a train, going from Grand Central Station in New York City up to New
Canaan, Connecticut. I dug into the book I had just bought impulsively—just as you
have perhaps bought this one. As far as astrology was concerned—and perhaps brain
surgery or fixing electrical appliances—I was at the “idiot level.”
I found myself immediately fascinated: There were juicy new power words to learn,
ways to say things that sounded a little mysterious but, according to the author, were
as clear as the Liberty Bell clanging for my personal freedom, my individuality as a
birthright gift from the gods! “I’M a CAPRICORN because the Sun was located in that
sign when I was born! I MEAN BUSINESS. I GET THINGS DONE. (I can be pretty
melancholic sometimes, but don’t tell anyone) BUT, I’M IN THERE FOR THE LONG
HAUL. I AGE WELL!”
My brain was racing through the pages to pick up more things about my Capricorn
nature. There was something pointed out about my tremendous attraction to any
PISCES woman who ever lived. I filed that away (and remembered it regularly
throughout 27 years with two Pisces ladies!).
There was a lot about my incompatibility with ARIES people (and I knew that that
explained everything about my relationship with my mother, God take her soul!).
Okay. When I finally settled down, I saw that astrology had reasons for these generalities,
that those reasons were tied to the miracle of creation, to millennia of keen
observations by wise people, and that the mysteries of being were easily converted
into strategies of becoming—I was hooked!
By the time I had arrived at New Canaan on that hot summer day, I didn’t need a
cool drink as much as I needed pencil and paper. I was going to follow the guidelines
in the book and start to build my horoscope, the portrait of my birth in space and
time, the portrait of who I am (the nice stuff, the tough stuff, all of it!).
Books, Lines, and Thinkers: How hooked was I? I studied, studied, studied, and gradually
realized that nothing was more interesting to me in the world than astrology—
and it probably was also in a previous life, as I was learning. I saw how I could
appreciate myself and my purpose in life, and how I could help others to do the
same. Time and space now started to mean something more than three meals a day,
a raise now and then, college education for the children, and the IRS.
And that book, with the neat lines and the quotes from all the wise men from
Ptolemy to Newton to Einstein to J. P. Morgan, was NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD
AS THIS ONE YOU’RE HOLDING RIGHT NOW.
Watch Out! Be warned: Madeline Gerwick-Brodeur has the lines that will hook you,
too; she’s one of those wise thinkers in astrology who really knows what she’s talking about.
And Madeline and her co-author, Lisa Lenard, have STYLE. This book is a breeze. For
example (getting back to the Pisces issue, please), their “Fish Facts for Pisces” talks
about the (delightful) character trait to live largely in the world of the imagination,
the realm of dreams, where objects and events seem to have no connection to outer
reality. (I, the Capricorn warlord of accomplishment, I love it!) But then, they tack on
the lines that show you the substance within all the fun: “Above all, Fishes (Pisces)
are here to give, not just to those like themselves, but to anyone who needs their
help, love, attention, or whatever.” Isn’t that lovely? Isn’t that valid? … And that’s
just the beginning. How do all the traits, powers, and interrelationships among the
planets within the signs reflect your life, the details of your progress, the outlines of
your dreams, the dynamics of your relationships?
Well, my fateful train ride those many years ago took me to write some twenty-four
technical astrological texts of my own, to lecture throughout the world, and to appreciate
this “Complete Idiot’s Guide” to the field I love. I can tell you for sure that, from
now on, when I introduce newcomers to this fascinating world, I will recommend
this guide. They, and you, will be thrilled with Madeline Gerwick-Brodeur and Lisa

Introduction
